School Dances
Tired of the simple flashing lights and crackly-speaker sound system? Those days are now LONG gone! 'Intelligent' lighting that moves and changes color to the sound of the music, up to 10 lasers shooting beams and patterns across the room, and other club-style lighting effects turn a normally boring gymnasium into the hottest nightclub. They have to continually move around 'through' the kids to keep them from loitering in any one spot. The fewer chaperones you have, the more you'll need to keep moving. This is to prevent the kids who are normally well-behaved from being influenced by the one or two who may have other ideas in mind. Too many times I've seen 15-20 chaperones (usually more than enough to cover the average school dance) congregate out in the halls or in groups of two or three on the fringe of the gym. There needs to be movement by the chaperones to insure the safety of all who attend. This comes from years of observing student-teacher interaction (and the consequences of 'doing', or 'not doing') at these types of events. Lighting - While most DJ's bring 'mood' lighting to an event, security lighting is not provided. So if there are dark spots (usually the corners), then extra attention will need to be paid to those areas by the chaperones. Access - Kids will be kids. A fact that doesn't need to be explained any further. But because of that, an area of concern is the DJ booth/area itself. The students will inevitably be coming and going throughout the dance requesting that I play their favorite song of the moment Thus, my attention is basically allocated to providing the music they want to hear. While I will, and do, keep my eyes and ears open the whole time, final oversight of the student activities on the dance floor and near the DJ booth itself is the responsibility of the chaperones. There should be a least one chaperone on hand near the DJ area to watch over the kids who approach the DJ. As with all DJ's, not only is there considerable cost involved with the equipment and the music, but it can be an unsafe area with wires and cables running across the floor.
